In 1929, the British imposed restrictions on Jewish worship and banned sounding shofars at the holy site. For 18 years, Jewish youths, and eventually the Irgun, defied the military and police forces aligned against them. The young Jews were often bloodied and sent to jail but they succeeded in flouting the British edicts. Their fight against religious oppression became a call to proclaim liberty throughout the land
