LEHI ALIAS: Johnny

DATE OF BIRTH: 1922

DATE FALLEN: February 28, 1944

Arieh, son of Meir, was born 1922 in Bratislava Czechoslovakia. He was a member of Beitar and in 1939, aged 17, came to Eretz Yisrael with the Etzel ‘Af-Al-Pi’ illegal aliya. From Netanya’s shores he was sent to the Beitar group in Zichron-Ya’acov. His friends there described him as a tall, handsome, mischievous youth who was already turning gray. He joined Etzel there, and after the split joined Yair and Lehi. In 1941 he went to live in Rishon-Lezion, with  local Lehi members who had no resources and were being boycotted and hunted. Hassida Lipschitz, a member of Lehi, was their sole source of food and occasionally some money. Arieh participated in a weapons and sabotage course run by Siyomka. While demonstrating a fast draw with his handgun he accidentally wounded group member Pnina Ben-David.  Arieh was deeply shocked, depressed and contemplated suicide, until Pnina’s recovery. After the incident he moved to Kfar- Saba and joined the local Lehi branch.  Arieh was lonely and solitary in Israel, having no relatives or friends. His life of desolation and poverty continued in Kfar- Saba as before. With a friend, he stole a kerosene burner to cook something to eat. They were caught and he spent several months in jail for theft, while at the same time British police were seeking him for being a member of the “Stern Gang”. Exposed to all this degradation, he contracted tuberculosis. Lehi member Avraham Fleischman, took him into his room, which also served as the printing house for ‘Hahazit’, Lehi’s first undrground  publication. Avraham  brought him food from the restaurant where he worked. Arieh was ill and bedridden, unable to leave the room. When his condition deteriorated further, he was taken to the Jerusalem hospital, where he passed away aged 21, on February 28,1944. He was buried in Nachalat-Yitzhak cemetery. Earlier in Rishon-Lezion, he’d fallen in love with a Lehi member. She was later sent to Bethlehem Women’s Prison for several years. Upon release, she discovered that her beloved was no longer alive.
