NAME: Aharoni (Aharonchik) Zvi

LEHI ALIAS: Shmuel

DATE OF BIRTH: November 1, 1927

DATE FALLEN: December 27, 1945

Zvi was born on  November 1, 1927 in Vilnius  Poland to his parents Efraim and Leah. His father worked in the perfume industry and was a nationalist Zionist, serving as vice-chairman of the town’s Zionist Committee. The family made Aliya with their three sons; Zvi was the youngest. First they resided in Petah-Tikva, afterwards moving to Jerusalem He studied in elementary school and later at ‘Ma’aleh’ high-school. He later discontinued his studies and took up light mechanics at the ‘Inbar’ workshop. Being a traditional Jew with nationalist sentiments, he found his way to “Brit- Hachashmonaim” youth group, a national religious movement linked to Beitar, most of whose members joined Lehi. Zvi was bound to Lehi with all his heart. Even when  some of his friends left the underground at a certain stage to join Hagana, Zvi remained faithful to Lehi. He took part in various missions, and  participated in a weapons training course end of 1945, led by ‘Tall Blond Dov’, who observed the participants, recognised Zvi’s qualities and selected him for participation in future actions against the enemy. He took part in a combat mission December 27, 1945, against the British Police building at the Russian Compound  Jerusalem. Zvi was part of Dov’s unit. The attack began under machine-gun and sub-machine-gun cover. After eliminating resistance from the British guard units, the unit broke through to the backyard, lay explosives, and detonated the four-story building, which thereby collapsed. When the forces retreated, the unit ran into an ambush set up by British Officers and Police;  Zvi got injured from their fire. The main artery of his leg was hit, and he soon died from loss of blood. In  Lehi’s obituary it was stated:

“The Freedom Fighter Shmuel (Zvi Aharoni) fell in the war while fulfilling his combat duty, upon  Jerusalem’s Walls, on December 27, 1945. Respect and Eternal Glory to those falling in the battles of our War of Independence. Deathly hatred prevails unto our murderous enemy – conqueror of our Land.  Fighters for the Freedom of Israel”
