NAME: Bar-Giora (Dufein) Moshe

LEHI ALIAS: Moshe

DATE OF BIRTH: 1920

DATE FALLEN: November 1, 1945

Moshe was born in Zadlavonov Poland 1920, to Menachem-Mendel and Ita, and had a brother, Avraham, who became a Partisan and was  executed by the Germans. Their father died during their childhood; their mother re-married with Mordechai Reise, and had another son, Ze’ev, and daughter, Sofia. Moshe studied in high-school, was active in Beitar, joined Etzel in Poland and underwent military training. He immigrated with Second Aliyah, in a small ship which sunk near Crete. All passengers were rescued and arrived aboard another ship. Moshe swam  ashore, was transferred to Beitar Netanya then arrested for being an illegal immigrant.  News of his first ship’s destruction reached his family, who mourned ‘Shiv’ah’.  He changed his name to ‘Bar-Giora’ and  moved to Jerusalem, to his Lehi activities. On May 1, 1942, while walking with his friend Yisrael Tvu’ah to a weapons warehouse, a British ambush  opened fire upon them. Tvu’ah was injured in his leg; they were arrested, sentenced to seven years’  prison. On December 23, 1943 he escaped from Jerusalem Central Prison with Ya’acov Eli’av; while decorating the prison warden’s courtyard for Christmas, they tricked the Arab guard in charge, and jumped the fence. After that, Moshe  put his entire energy into underground activity. At the Haifa branch, he planned  and executed, as ordered, the assassination of Police/CID heads . Moshe and his friends lived in harsh conditions, suffering  hunger but would not be broken. A  patriot, leader and friend, he was loved and respected by all. Lehi experienced  changes, undertaking large operations. In March 1945 Moshe took part in the first Top Commanders Course, and got posted to Haifa taking charge of operations. The ‘Hebrew Revolt Movement’ arose. Moshe planned  the  detonation of explosives in the refineries. On the night of November 1, 1945, he hid with three friends in the refineries area. Loading the explosives, a malfunction occurred, the material exploded in his hands: he was instantly killed. His friends managed to escape, two of them injured. Moshe was buried in Haifa. His mother, Ze’ev, and sisters Sofia and Tova, arrived in Israel after his death.
