Yudke slithered down the tunnel with practiced ease. He had done it
dozens of times while digging. He knew where all the supports were,
where the tunnel twisted and turned. He launched himself forward
on his knees and elbows, with eyes almost closed. But even though
he knew the way and was in top physical form, he still had difficulty
crawling the length of the tunnel, which was about seventy-five
meters. It took him a full half-hour to make it to the end. Then he
had to break through the “hatch” first opened by Siumke, which of
course had been sealed while they completed their preparations…
This the story of the greatest escape of the century: the heroic
breakout of 20 Freedom Fighters of Israel from a British detention
camp in Latrun by way of a 75-meter-long tunnel! Through sheer
audacity and cunning, this shocked the foreign government in
the Land of Israel as well as the entire British Empire
